Understanding current and emerging models

Authors: Iuliia Hoban, Leasa Weimer, Allison Casaly

In this section, we delve into the diverse and ever-evolving models of international partnerships. We explore various frameworks, such as bilateral agreements, consortia, joint programs, and strategic alliances. By understanding the nuances of these models, you will gain valuable insights into selecting the most suitable approach for your institution’s goals and aspirations. We also highlight emerging trends and innovative partnership models that are shaping the future of international collaborations.

Factors to consider:

Context:

As the post-pandemic environment and geopolitics continue to evolve, international partnerships are impacted by the changing context. The pandemic opened up online interaction and now virtual learning, exchange and collaborative online international learning (COIL) has become more common. With geopolitics, partners are changing. In the U.S., there is an intentional focus on quality vs. quantity of partnerships. Globally, there is more emphasis on international partnerships evidenced by the United Nations inclusion of partnerships in the sustainable development goals (SDG).

  • What are the current global contexts, such as post-pandemic challenges and shifting geopolitics, that may impact international partnerships?
  • How do these contexts affect the development and implementation of partnership models?

Rundown of Existing Partnership Models:

  • How can you gain a comprehensive understanding of how partnerships function “on the ground” in terms of communication, initiation, and management?
  • What are the common motivations behind partnership formation, such as faculty-driven initiatives or study abroad programs?

Foundation and Overview of Models:

  • What foundational knowledge do you need to understand various partnership models and their applications to different types of institutions (public, private, small liberal arts, etc.)?
  • Can you think of practical examples where these models have been successfully implemented in similar contexts?
